September

  • National Preparedness Month: the house side of the plan
  • Have the furnace or boiler serviced before the first cold night
  • Have the chimney and fireplace inspected
  • Start the heating season with a fresh filter, and choose the rating on purpose
  • Acclimate flooring and trim before fall projects

October

  • Fire Prevention Week: alarms on every level, inside and outside bedrooms
  • Winterize the outdoor faucets
  • Clean the gutters after the leaves come down
  • Insulate the pipes in unheated spaces
  • Air seal and insulate the attic while it is dry
  • Before the first fire or the first furnace run

November

  • Clocks fall back: batteries, and the ten-year check
  • Reverse the ceiling fans
  • Fireplace season: the three-foot rule and the eighth-inch rule
  • Set the winter thermostat routine
  • If the outdoor water is still on, shut it down now
  • Humidity for the woodwork as the heat comes on

Every month

  • Look at the furnace or air handler filter.
  • Press the test button on every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Press TEST, then RESET, on each GFCI outlet, and the TEST button on any AFCI breakers in the panel.
  • Run water into any sink, tub or floor drain that does not get used.
